Indigenous Australians are descended from the people who lived in Australia and the surrounding islands prior to European colonisation. It is generally agreed that Australian Aboriginal peoples originally came from different parts of Asia via Southeast Asia and have resided in Australia for at least 45,000–50,000 years. The Australian Government defines Indigenous Australians as people who: are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin; and are accepted as such in the communities in which they live or have lived. History has it that there are over 900 Aboriginal groups across Australia. Each group is distinguished by unique names that identify a particular language, dialect or speech format. Each language form was used for original myths, from which the distinctive words and names of individual myths were derived. Indigenous Australian art includes art made by Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The art uses a wide range of media including leaves, bark painting, wood carving, rock carving, water color painting, sculpting, ceremonial clothing and sand painting. These art forms date back to European colonisation by thousands of years and up to the present day. It has grown in popularity and appreciated by fans worldwide due to its artistic representations of life forms using multi color pallets and designs. Many are also limited in supply as it is hand crafted and no two pieces are the same. Turtles are reptiles with hard shells that protect them from predators. They are among the oldest and most primitive groups of reptiles, having evolved millions of years ago. Turtles live all over the world in almost every type of climate. The turtle figure or image is believed to offer support, success, and riches to the owner. The turtle held a major presence and is adored by many cultures worldwide for its long and hardy life span. In ancient mythology, the turtle is related to the world's creation and propagation.
